Can Coops keep the lights on? 10 November 2021

CLIMATE EMERGENCY – ENERGY PRICE INCREASES – CAN COOPS KEEP THE LIGHTS ON?

This event coincides with COP26 – a large international conference on climate change being held in Glasgow in early November.  COP stands for Conference of the Parties.  It’s the 26th time they have met.

Join us for a brand new online workshop exploring how co-operatives have emerged and changed in response to periods of crisis.

It sees our Principal and CEO Dr Cilla Ross join forces with Liz McIvor, Manager at the Co-operative Heritage Trust, to co-deliver the session.

You'll engage with a variety of sources and artefacts from the Co-operative Archive, examining how they reflect the huge changes that the co-operative movement has gone through since 1840.

Workplace democracy as a solution to the crisis - union co-op manifesto to be launched at online event

As the future world of work looks set to change beyond all recognition thanks to automation and Covid-19, we're joining a range of other partners to highlight the release of a brand new manifesto.

Taking place on Thursday 2nd July from 4pm - 5:30pm, this interactive webinar will see a wide range of speakers share their thoughts and insights on the union co-op model, as well as some of the challenges that they’ve seen it successfully address.

There’ll be the opportunity for participants to discuss and debate the manifesto, with break out rooms providing the perfect space in which to network with peers from across the sector.

Co-operatives Fortnight takes place between 24 June and 7 July and this event is a celebration of what co-operative education has achieved.  The Co-operative College began in 1919 and is celebrating its centenary this year.  It has supported members, employees of co-operatives to develop their knowledge and skills and also has worked to be inclusive in providing education to adult learners from diverse backgrounds.   This event will explore how we move forward and progress this unique way of learning.  Each speaker will have 15 minutes to talk and then conclude with an open forum for general discussion.  

We will also be launching our “Co-operative Poem” following on from the campaign to write a collective poem for Co-operatives Fortnight.

A joint meeting of Co-op groups working in the West Midlands, East Midlands and East of England was held on 5 September 2018 attended by stakeholders including the Co-operative College, Co-operatives UK, Co-op Party, Co-op Foundation, retail co-ops across the region including Lincolnshire Co-op, CASE business development and Clockwise Credit Union and members and employees of different co-ops regionally.  The event was hosted by Co-ops East Midlands at the Central England Co-op Society in Leicester.

If you would like to learn more about co-ops, how they play an important role economically and socially today for individuals and communities, contact us.  There is a wealth of information available.  Some of life issues being faced today, and campaigned for, are ethical money management, housing, youth employment, food poverty, modern slavery and loneliness.  Co-ops are pro-active in raising awareness of these issues and seeking co-op solutions.   Co-ops are based on a set of values and principles, set out by the International Co-op Alliance, and members democratically work together to ensure these are converted into practical working through their involvement.
